The science behind ChangeLitmus

ChangeLitmus is a self-report readiness indicator. It blends six well-established models from behavioral science and information systems research into five measurable factors, then maps your weakest factors to evidence-based interventions.

Foundational models

Technology Acceptance Model (TAM)

Davis, 1989

People adopt technology when they believe it's useful and easy to use. Perceived usefulness is consistently the strongest predictor of intention to use.

Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT)

Venkatesh et al., 2003

Extends TAM with social influence (what respected peers do) and facilitating conditions (access, time, support). Explains up to 70% of variance in usage intention.

COM-B Model of Behaviour

Michie, van Stralen & West, 2011

Behaviour happens when Capability, Opportunity and Motivation align. Used widely in public health and organizational change to diagnose which lever to pull.

Self-Efficacy Theory

Bandura, 1977

Belief in one's ability to succeed shapes effort and persistence. Small mastery experiences are the most powerful way to build it.

Growth Mindset & Learning Orientation

Dweck, 2006; Dweck & Leggett, 1988

People who see abilities as learnable embrace challenge and recover from mistakes — key when learning fast-changing tools.

Technology Anxiety & Diffusion of Innovations

Meuter et al., 2003; Rogers, 1962

Worry about errors, ethics or job security slows adoption; trialability and observability of safe wins speed it up.

The five factors

Perceived Value

TAM · UTAUT performance expectancy

How strongly you believe AI can improve the quality, speed or impact of your work.

Capability & Self-Efficacy

COM-B Capability · Bandura self-efficacy

Your confidence that you can learn and use AI tools effectively.

Learning Mindset

Growth mindset · Learning goal orientation

Your appetite for experimenting, learning new skills and tolerating early mistakes.

Social & Environmental Opportunity

COM-B Opportunity · UTAUT social influence & facilitating conditions

How much your team, manager and environment make AI use normal and supported.

Trust & Comfort

Technology anxiety · Diffusion of Innovations

How comfortable you feel relying on AI, versus worry about accuracy, ethics or job impact.

How scoring works

  • 20 statements, 4 per factor, rated on a 5-point Likert scale (strongly disagree → strongly agree).
  • Five items are reverse-keyed to reduce acquiescence bias (the tendency to agree with everything).
  • Each factor is scored 0–100; your overall ChangeLitmus score is the mean across all items, scaled 0–100.
  • Recommendations target your 2–3 lowest factors, using intervention types from the Behaviour Change Wheel (e.g., training, modelling, environmental restructuring, enablement).

Limitations

ChangeLitmus is a reflective, developmental tool — not a validated psychometric instrument or a performance evaluation. Self-reports reflect how you feel today and can shift quickly with experience and support. Use results for personal growth and team conversations, never for hiring or performance decisions.
